What is a resolution
According to the Cambridge English dictionary a New Year’s Resolution is-
A promise that you make to yourself to start doing something good or stop doing something bad on the first day of the year: “Have you made any New Year’s resolutions?” “Yes, I’m going to eat more healthily and give up smoking.”
The History behind resolution
The practice of making resolutions for the new year is thought to have first caught on among the ancient Babylonians, who made promises in order to earn the favour of the gods and start the year off on the right foot. There may be other insights, about the history of this practice, I would like you to share with me if you know more about this cultural, almost religious, or superstitious practice.
I always had so many things to resolve in my life, let alone make new resolutions, I just didn’t even want to think about it.
Be your Experience
Maybe instead I could choose a metaphor that has meaning and value and can keep me on track through- out the year. Maybe its not about promising, its about saying yes to claiming the goodness in your life as you wish it be.
With a metaphor I can check in at the end of the day and say Yes , that metaphor had meaning in my life today. This type of new year resolution has no pressure, its nurturing, and inspiring me in a way that uplifts myself and others.
This sounds like the process for me, Being in Sync, in flow. Not mentalising over good goals and getting angry over the goals that didn’t come through.
Here’s my metaphor for 2019
“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” Leo Buscaglia
If you want to get more out of your mind and into your heart this year give this little process a go
If you like this idea let me know, get in touch, and say Hi
